The Kyaka II refugee settlement currently hosts nearly 130,000 refugees, 92% of whom are from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The KOICA humanitarian project in Kyaka II refugee settlement aims to reduce the risk of Gender Based Violence (GBV) and enhance the socio-economic capacities of DRC refugee women in the settlement. The project includes various objectives such as enhancing refugee women’s self-reliance, preventing and responding GBV cases with a focus on psychosocial support for GBV survivors, and strengthening community-based protection mechanisms. Throughout 2023, a total of 479 individuals, including women and girls, men and boys, police officers and community leaders, participated in GBV awareness sessions in order to improve their knowledge on GBV prevention and response in line with a survivor-centred approach.
Construction of a Women Development Centre (WDC).
GNIUG established a WDC in Kakoni, one of nine zones in the Kyaka II refugee settlement. In addition, GNIUG supported 240 women to establish 6 Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) groups and provide them with basic income-generating skills to enhance their economic opportunities. In addition, 261 women received literacy Training.
Construction of a Police Post to Contribute to a Safer Community.
GNIUG constructed a police post in the Byabakora zone, the most densely populated zone with approximately 17% of the refugee population, to provide a sense of security to the refugees and contribute to the community-based protection mechanisms.
